UPBEAT
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
When someone asks, “Is that your better half?”
We just look at them, and we laugh
I'll never be more that a happy third
We'll never be more than theater absurd
But you're keeping me upbeat when I'm down low
You're picking me up when there's no where to go
I feel the summer heat when I'm with you
Don't want to cool it down whatever we get into
We keep it upbeat – keep it upbeat
You call me Marcus Brutus all the time
Like I'm guilty of planning some big crime
I'm always talking crap about myself
You say, “Put that blade back up on the shelf”
It's back on the shelf
You're keeping me upbeat when I'm down low
You're picking me up when there's no where to go
I feel the summer heat when I'm with you
Don't want to cool it down whatever we get into
We keep it upbeat – keep it upbeat
But you have to be on guard
When the tempo drops, people get bizarre
You fight them off hand to hand
I'll be in my safe spot. I hope you understand
Keep it upbeat when I'm down low
You're picking me up when there's no where to go
I feel the summer heat when I'm with you
Don't want to cool it down whatever we get into
We keep it upbeat – keep it upbeat
Keeping it upbeat, upbeat...

BREAKING UP
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
We're here again and we're lost
I'm right behind you, but our signal is crossed
You stop dead ahead in your tracks
I want to help you, but our future looks black
And I'm waking up at this fable's end
And I see what I was missing in “The Bear and The Two Friends”
I climbed up in a tree to hide. You laid down like you had died
The bear whispered something in your ear that made all of this so perfectly clear
We are breaking up. We are breaking up
This fairy tale setting brings about my worst fears
You stand silent, but your message is clear
I'm stuck on my own path direction unknown
Your favorite tree has refused to grow
And I'm waking up, at this fable's end
And I see what I was missing in “The Bear and The Two Friends”
I climbed up in a tree to hide. You laid down like you had died
The bear whispered something in your ear that made all of this so perfectly clear
We are breaking up. We are breaking up
I know you're tired of the things I can't defend
You know I don't even like your friends
You caught me counting the days until I can drop out
Go on about your business that you have mapped out
We are breaking up. We are breaking up...

FABLE
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
I'm going under
You're at the wheel
I've already ruined your night
That's just how you feel
Another Saturday night leaning over this table
No one in here knows roots from a fable...turn it up.
I'm floating under the lights with a view from above
Your voice is trailing on off...
I'm singing, “Is This Love?
That I'm feeling? That I'm feeling?”
And who would've figured the way that we'd meet?
You with the knife in your hand, cut into me
I enjoyed the ride, but I hated the landing
They're wheeling me up to the floor in good standing
That's good to know
I'm floating under the lights with a view from above
Your voice is trailing on off...I'm singing, “Is This Love?
That I'm feeling? That I'm feeling?”
You're laughing your way on down the hall
I can hear you coming now. I'm ready for it all
I'm getting stronger now in every way
I'm doing my walks now. I hear what you have to say
We're floating under the lights with a view from above
Your voice is trailing on off...I'm singing, “Is This Love?
Is this love that I'm feeling? Oh, that I'm feeling?”

YOU AND YOUR LOVE
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
When my name came up on your phone
Do you remember that pitch that I'd thrown?
About seeing you once again
When you said yes, I nearly lost control of my brain
I remember walking on air, down the stairs, my heart racing
I believe in myself and the dreams that I'm chasing
All because you and your love let me in
You and I go for a ride down the road
I hold on tight, because not I'm sure if you're in control
You've got your hands on the wheel, foot full on the gas
They didn't teach us this old stuff in class
I remember walking on air, down the stairs, my heart racing
I believed in myself and the dreams that I'm chasing
All because you and your love let me in
This is not what my imagination figured (And it figures)
I'll give it a shot. 'Cause maybe my world is about to get bigger...bigger
I remember walking on air, down the stairs, my heart racing
I believe in myself and the dreams that I'm chasing
All because you and your love let me in

IMPOSSIBLE PUZZLE
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
Well he's prepared himself for the bitter end
She's telling herself she can start again
But they've studied each other beyond being friends
Their two separate worlds have run side by side
Never touching each other, It's time that they collide
He's having some trouble with her coming around
Enjoying his company, then flying out of town
He just wishes she'd tell him what's bringing her down
So through long walks and dark talks, she tells him everything...
“Don't limit my future, that happens whenever I cling.”
Now it's finally making some sense. Well it's true, it's not you
He is done, he is tired of the the expense. It's true, it's not you
“Unless it's meant to be,” she says, “You will never excite me”
Won't you look at our bright little futures, look at our family trees
Look at our bright little futures, and don't let this happen to me....to me
He's never been able to understand
Why she feels so uncomfortable holding his hand.
He's tired, he's angry, he's thinking up a plan
The pieces of puzzle are all coming together
He's pouring on the glue, but the bond is taking forever
It's taking forever
Now it's finally making some sense. Yeah, it's true, it's not you
He is done, he is tired of the the expense. It's true, it's not you
“Unless it's meant to be,” she says, “You will never excite me”

OUTWITTED
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
I've been thinking about what dignity means
He says love's not enough--it's about biology
His reasons so small--without theology
Of all the words, the best I've read was something Edwin Markham said:
“We drew a circle that shut me out, a heretic, a rebel, a thing to flout
But love and I had the wit to win
We drew a circle and let him in”
Your family is here. The one you don't recognize
Would it be OK if she was a child bride?
What matters to you is what our genes say
You won't let us inside if you know that we're gay
Of all the words, the best I've read was something Edwin Markham said:
“We drew a circle that shut me out, a heretic, a rebel, a thing to flout
But love and I had the wit to win
We drew a circle and let him in”
Upon further reflection, I hope you'll realize the connection is more than blood
Our liberty to marry, Tom or Sue or Terry isn't sent from above
We drew a circle. We let him in

UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
There are times when something takes me back
When I was a kid. When I was was on track
There was always someone in my life
But then I push them away, I never held on too tight
Until it's too late. Until it's too late
Now I'm blue in the city of light
Trying to find my way. Trying to make things right
I navigate, clear head, don't think about what she said
Until I see her, and I see her again
I know there's nothing in the past to find
But I'm still making a big mess of my mind
I'm letting go of all the things that we hate
I'm leaving now because I know it's too late
I left my dreams standing there
When she said, “You know, life just ain't fair”
Another year thinking back 'bout those times
Another year with you on my mind. Oh...
Was it you at the top of the stairs?
With your long leather coat in the warm summer air
Was it at the Gare du Nord or the Place de Clichy?
That I drove you way
I know there's nothing in the past to find
But I'm still making a big mess of my mind
I'm letting go of all the things that we hate
I'm leaving now because I know it's too late

EXPIRATION DATING
Words & Music - Joel Boyea
I never understood
Fast drives on the road
Long walks in the woods
They made you feel good
I feel time running out
That look on your face was never in doubt
What's this about?
I hold on to the past
And all these sick feelings
You said it wouldn't last
We are expiration dating
You told me, “We're through”
You got up and left the room
I went from red to blue.
I'm left without a clue
This time it's for real
No taking words back
I know the deal
You said what you feel
Walking hand in hand in the summer
We never had a plan for each other
Now time is up and I am out of favor
I said, “Time is up” and “I am out of favor”
I hold on to the past
And all these sick feelings
You said it wouldn't last
We are expiration dating
We said it wouldn't last
We are expiration dating
